Light gauge steel

Light gauge steel framing, from the plan to the roll-former.

Stud turns a 2D plan into panelised light gauge steel framing (cold-formed steel, CFS): studs, tracks, headers, joists and rafters, with their connections and tooling. With the Framer plan, the same model goes out as machine files for Howick and Tekla Pinnacle roll-formers, IFC and production PDFs.

What does Stud frame in steel?

Cold-formed steel is Stud's default framing. The agent first builds the 3D model of the building, then splits the walls, floors and roofs into panels, then frames each panel.

  • Studs, tracks, headers, sills, cripples and noggings
  • Floor joists, rafters, blocking and trusses
  • Connections between members, with the tooling the roll-former punches
  • Openings framed from the plan's dimensions
  • Multi-storey buildings, L and U shapes, flat roofs

Which files go to production?

With the Framer plan, every export comes from the same model you checked on screen.

  • Machine files for Howick and Tekla Pinnacle roll-formers
  • IFC: architecture, framing and panels
  • Production PDFs: a framing layout per level and a sheet per panel
  • Quantities: steel weights per level and in total

How do you keep control of the framing?

You set your rules in the project settings: maximum panel width, stud spacing, naming of levels, panels and members. Then you guide the agent in plain words, or click a member in the 3D view and ask for the change. With Framer, the Stud Framer agent edits anything in the framing, from the panel down to the part.

Who is it for?

Light gauge steel builders and panel manufacturers who receive 2D plans, price them, then build the jobs they win. Stud does not run structural calculations: the design stays checked by your engineer.

Questions

Which roll-formers does Stud write files for?

Howick and Tekla Pinnacle, with the Framer plan. Only the steel members your roll-former makes go into its files.

Can the same building be framed in timber?

Yes. Once the volumes are right, the same model can be framed in light gauge steel or in timber.
